I also use card tubes a lot. I have found that the best way of treating them
is to give them a couple of coats of polyurethane diluted 50:50 with white
spirit initially, This impregnates them and makes them stronger and keeps
them dry. It also improves the adhesion of later full strength coats. The
largest tube I have used was 4", used originally as the core for a roll of
polythene, I have seen them up to 8" used in the carpet trade.
