My other answer was incomplete.... more here:

And the cap stays lit longer with no streamers to ground because
the energy is not used up as fast with air streamers.  This extra
energy that is not used up, travels back from secondary to primary
and keeps the gap alight for a longer duration.  Sparks to ground
really sucks the energy out the system pronto.  There's no energy
left to travel back to the primary and prolong the gap firing.
