.... and also use a sanding block to hold the sandpaper.  This
will make the surface come out "flat" rather than bumpy.  Judge
the angle as you sand, so you sand the highest spots first.  As
you sand down to the proper surface level, be sure not to cut
through the coating to the wire beneath, etc......
