Godfrey,

I think it's an excellent idea.  I've always wanted to modify my
homemade ballast to make a core-slider mechanism, but I
never got around to it.  I don't think it will be too difficult to pull
the heavy wire around the bobbin because copper is rather
soft and flexible.
