I would get a sharp pointed wire on put on top to indicate the spark energy
even if it is low.  That will help to tune things in.  I would turn up the
variac till the gap fires but no more till things get tuned.

The phase of the sync gap is pretty important!  I would set it for the best
ouput from the wire first off.  Then play with the primary tap point.  Things
should go well from there.
