Ok ok I admit it... I love my tesla coil :) No really, the sparks are not
bad at all - they look to be about 500V, and dont hurt at all. I am
considering putting up a screen but i really cannot be bothered at all - my
worksop also confines me somewhat in terms of moving away. Put it this way,
if the breakout point was angled in my direction I would probably get a
strike but not to worry as I have a grounded rod about 1" away from me, in
front :)

The variac handle is plastic so I dont have a problem - i only first noticed
when there were loads of RF burns on my fingertips...
