It is similar to a pole pig, but a different usage...... 
Without knowing any model numbers or manufacturer's names..... I would say
these are plate transformers from FM broadcast transmitters..... One amp seems
a bit small for the physical size of the transformer, however I realize the
pics can be a bit misleading..... on the other hand, when one would wire them
with a 3 phase supply and feed them into full wave rectifiers, the current
capacity will go up  considerably.......Then you are looking at a rating of
five to seven amps..... at whatever the voltage is....A nice supply for a DC
coil.. 50 bucks is cheap.... the freight will eat your lunch.....
