Hi Matt,
I think your analogy may be confusing the amplitude with the "natural"
frequency of the fence. 

As you applied energy to the fence it started to swing with increasing 
amplitude
until it found its natural frequency. At that point the fence was swinging 
with a
long wavelength determined by the physical size of the fence and the 
frequency of your
push decreased as the fence came into resonance.  Better analogies would be a 
short or long pendulum or piano strings.
