I'm not sure i understand what you mean by forcing air thru the gap. The 
Sears shop vac
is one of these powerful vac/blower  things where if you remove the top of 
the cannister
you can use the the entire assembly as a portable (long Cord) leaf and trash 
blower.
With the tapered blower nozzle attached, Sears say it's 100 mph. I probably 
have too
much air blowing across the gaps but I don't know what is the correct CFM. As 
you
wrote, too many variables.
