Good question. Study an iron transformer core. Notice
it's made of a stack of thin iron strips. Shunts are
made of the same stuff. They are little square stacks
of transformer iron tucked into the core windows
between the primary and secondary windings. Usually
they are pressed in tightly with a bit of card stock
to prevent them from actually touching the core. On
MOTs they seem to be glued in place. On some NSTs, the
shunts are actually part of the main core, like little
tabs sticking out, and are only gapped on one side
with a narrow air gap.
