Sorry for being slow to respond.A magnetic amplifier is basicly a
transformer with an easly to saturate core and 3 windings. A DC is applied
to one winding to bias the core near saturation. a signal is applied to the
input winding to move the field toward and away fron saturation. This causes
a large output change as the magnetic field has sharp changes. This is like
the DC bias on a tunnel diode amp.The magnetic amp can control a large
output power with a small input power. This is ideal to drive motors.Tesla
invented the Mag amp before the vac tube amp was available.I have not
investigated what his DC bias source was at that time. The ones I have used
had another winding and a diode rectifier to supply dc bias.On a tracking
radar antenna the 100 hp drive motor was controled by a small servo motor on
my control pannel and a magnetic amp with no tubes or transistors to fail.
In a TC you could control your NTS and vary or regulate your coil with a mag
amp to get consistant output or voltage for other uses like X-Ray etc.
Robert H Ps. you could control a PIG coil easly.
