The best procedure is, after carefully tuning your primary tap, use some
scrap plywood pieces to elevate the coil in 1/2 inch increments to find the
best output location.  Go up as high as 4 inches with this experiment.  Run
your variac around 50-60% and carefully note the output arcing off a sharp
point to a ground stand.

With your coil design it should work out that the sec. starts approx 1/2
inch above the horizontal plane of the primary coil.  The primary is
configured to be 1.25 inches away from the sec. coilform.
