I've never seen any reference to sources of Litz wire, particularly for
surplus (i.e. cheap!) sources.  Anyone?  

Also, if Litz cable is made of numerous small insulated wires, how does one
solder to an end?  Is the insulation solderable?

To get the benefits of stranded cable the individual conductors MUST be
insulated from each other!  "Litz" wire is composed of many strands of
fine, INSULATED, wire.  For example, #10-38 is composed of 10 strands of
#38 insulated wire.
