The red wire is connected to one of the internal terminals (anode(A) or
cathode (K)).  It's there to allow your drive circuit to have a connection
that doesn't have the voltage drop in the lead due to the heavy current
flowing.  I don't have a datasheet handy for your particular device, so the
best way is to use an ohmmeter.  That lead will be zero ohms to either the
stud or the flying lead.
