I've tried a 2.8 amp variac and, while it did provide a measure of phase
shift, it caused lots of noise from the motor. I'm using a C&H 1/20 hp sync
motor. The variac also began to heat up after a few minutes of operation so
I haven't used it for that purpose again. BTW I used a 50 ufd. cap.
