hi jeremy,
                 my 2" coil has just had second light and does 13" with a
7.5kv 30ma
obit with a 12nf cap. so the performance is comparible although mine is
using 45 watts more.
you may be losing power if you have too many gaps with gap losses.
also its the inductance that matters not the size of the coil itself.
mine has 1500 turns of .2mm wire so the inductance is quite high
