blowing (or sucking) the gap makes a huge difference. The caps might be
rather weak TC performers as well, especially if they have a high esr/esl
with that many in series. For motors (every type that is imaginable, and
small salient pole synch ones, perfect for nst coils) I use

Speaking of which, what would be the minimum hp (saw a 1/500 there, didn't
think they made synch motors that small) to spin a 4"x 1/8" acrylic disk
with 2 electrodes made of 2 acorn nuts each (3600rpm, for shorter dwell
time) without having it lose synch/hunt ? I'm making a 8.75kv/35mA version
of one of those BH-10 vacuum testers (with 20x the spark, plus with the
120hz buzz it will sound cool) and size and weight of the whole thing
matters.
