Richard,

I would go with the 6.0" secondary.  It will perform well and scale up well 
as you increase the power input.  My 6.0" started out with a 12 kv 30 ma 
transformer and now uses a 14.4 kv 5kva supply.  You can use the spheres as 
a topload although I have always had to use a toroid on top of the 
secondary and then the sphere raised up above that.
