Finn,

The gap in the core needs to be epoxied to prevent noisy vibrations. I used 
JB Weld. I generously filled the gap (inside and out) with this strong 
epoxy and it's held up. Should the cores be pushed into saturation often 
for whatever reason, there is a possibility of breaking the epoxy. The 
brass clamp would be added security. But then, after several years, the 
epoxy on my cores are still holding up. The variacs run nice and quiet.
