Yeah, I agree. It sounds like the motor is just out of phase slightly.
Another possiblility is that your MOT supply may be out of phase by a number
of degrees relative to the mains voltage. The reason I say this is that it
uses capacitive/inductive current limiting right? You might try rotating the
motor in it's cradle or whatever it's sitting on. you should find your sweet
spot (if it's been modded correctly) at plus or minus 45 degrees from where
it is now.
