Some HV probes have a very high resistance and can act like an antenna
picking up AC voltage even if not connected to anything.

Safety note: An HV probe has two test leads, a high voltage and a ground
one. The high voltage lead goes through the resistor chain, but the ground
lead connects straight to the (-) terminal of your DMM.

Therefore it goes without saying that you need to either: Make sure the
terminal you clip the ground lead to is genuinely ground, or: Put the meter
on an insulating surface and don't go near it or the probe while the HV is
on.
