Furan testing in transformer oil is about determining how strong the paper 
still is, now whether things are toxic or not. Paper is really all that 
holds together oil filled distribution tranformers, and when the paper gets 
weak, your tranformer can fall apart and fail. The magnemotive forces in a 
transformer are huge, and even larger when they short out because 
insulation has failed.
