Hi Brad...

flourescent tubes can be "lit" from a distance of 30+ feet from the coil ( 
depending on the size and output of the coil)   I have found that 
flourescent tubes lite the brightest when one end of the tube is 
"literally" grounded ( stuck in the mud)   I havent tried incandescent 
bulbs yet but would assume that they would lite the brightest when hooked 
in series with anothe coil of equal Hz of the tesla coil system... to 
ground ...

the closer the flourescent tube is to the toroid and to ground produces the 
brightest effect ( basically the tube is stuck in the ground and a streamer 
is hitting the exposed upper portion of the tube) ...  watch out for flying 
glass if you have a 10KVA + coil ...
