And by the same author,

"Mathematics: The New Golden Age",
Penguin, 1988, ISBN 0-14-013551-0.

IMO the best ever layman's book on mathematics. This book
somehow manages to present the reader with a selection of
advanced topics in math, but at a level the layman can follow
without difficulty. Unlike some books that attempt this, this
one manages to preserve some real content - the subjects are
not so much dumbed down, rather they are beautifully laid out
for the reader's pleasure by Devlin's entertaining prose.

You know, if anyone ever said to you "Ok, what use is a TC?",
you could do worse than say that its most important contribution
to mankind is its ability to inspire people with a curiosity and
fascination with physics and math, tempting them to delve into
those topics to a little more depth than they would otherwise do.
