To be honest, I think there are much better and more interesting
demonstrations / experiments to perform than something like this.
For example, you could do an experiment involving various solutions in water
and their electrical conductivity.  Or perhaps as I stated before,
an experiment in electrostatics.  There is a wide range of very interesting
experiments to perform in electrostatics.  A home-built Van de Graaf
generator is relatively easy (at least compared to a tesla coil) and there
are a whole slew of experiments which can be performed using one.
