As a rule of thumb, while constructing a Tesla Coil, I use no metal 
whatsoever that isn't absolutely required by the TC circuitry.  That 
eliminates a source of arcing problems and the like.  That generally 
translates into:  nylon bolts, dowels, biscuits, wood glue and zip ties.
