John Freau is one of the masters of modern day tesla coiling.  Its all about
synergy and how each of the components
work together and about tuning, experimenting, and tweaking.
I'm sure John had to play with it awhile to get those 44".  That kind of
performance just doesn't appear the first time you power up some arbitrary
coil.
It takes, work, experience, and more work . . .
