I can think of Two explanations for this phenomenon

1) The lightning in the area  slightly altered the mains voltage (due
induction into mains wiring) and caused the coil to surge due more volts in.

2) Every time you have a lightning event in an area the local electrostatic
gradient changes and this would interact with the gradients from your coil.

I do not believe for a moment that you were likely to cause lightning to
strike you coil. As a general rule the nearest high object as long as you
are closer to it than the height difference should protect you.
