It's OK, I do believe you :) I have had flashovers when driving my small
OLTC secondary with the driver designed for the big one. But they went down
the outside of the secondary, not the inside. They happened between two
pieces of copper foil that I had glued onto the former as places to solder
the start and finish of the secondary wire.

I suppose this proves the point about field control, and suggests that if I
had drilled holes and poked the wire through, the flashover would have gone
down the inside.
