I have also jumped on the SSTC bandwagon, and am constructing a monster. By 
recycling an older secondary and MMC, it really won't cost any more than a 
pole pig, SRSG motor, G10 disc and variacs to switch it over to PSSTC 
operation. The circuits are actually pretty damn simple. I have more or 
less learnt the basics over the last few weeks, and I'm a geologist! I 
would guess under $250 max if you use a proven design and don't waste money 
on killing components.
