Scot,

I built a sync rotary gap using one of the Oriental Motors (p/n 
5SK25A-AULA) purchased from C & H sales a couple of years ago for 
$40.00.  It is a salient pole motor.  You can see a picture of it at my web

It utilizes a John Freau phase control system and works very well.
