I've been meaning to ask, is it OK to just lay a piece of copper pipe on top of the toroid sticking out to the side a little to provide a "jumping off point?" Or, does this require a more substantial connection to the toroid? Thanks.

That will work just fine. Other things that work well are crumpled aluminum foil, a piece of AWG 14 or AWG12 wire, a thumbtack stuck with rubber cement (point out), etc.
