Never actually done it with a coil that big or how much it would cost, but first thing that comes to mind for a non-plastic route is putting an inch layer of parafin wax on it.

Hey Terry,

I do have a big roll of the 4 mil drop cloth PE (or maybe its PP as
you say?) film stuff.  I think i will make a blanket type thing out of
a whole bunch of layers and try that first.  Not sure i want to fork
out 25 bucks for some insulation material that i probably already have
on hand.  But if i can find the nice thick stuff for much cheaper than
mcmaster i may go that route.  I do think you are right that many many
layers of thin film would be superior, i just need a good way to do
it.

Anyway, many things to do to the magnifier to keep my busy, so im happy!
