I guess it depends on what your goal is: longer, brighter sparks (like most TC builders) or higher output voltage (but not necessarily bigger sparks). I read in the TCBOR newsletter somewhere where a group made a sec with 7000+ turns on a 8x 45" (or thereabouts) and got 5 MV out with15/120 in, but the sparks were not particularly impressive and quite dim. On the list I often see around 1400T +/- 200 as the magic number most often quoted as the one to shoot for for best spark length vs. input power (strikes a balance between L vs. R).

Hi all,
  I'm getting ready to wind a 8.5" x 38" secondary.
It will have about 2533 turns of #28 wire.

Is there any down side to this many turns?

Any feedback before I start winding?
                     Mike

P.S.
 My form is 8.5 x 42"
I figure about 3 lb of wire.
I think it's about a 280mh coil
Self resonant freq. should be 112khz
With a 9pf toroid should resonate at 75 khz
Have I made any errors?
