Re: option 1 or option 2.....

I disagree with the statement that 940C's don't survive moderate use. They aren't as good as 942C's, sure, but I have 4 strands of 10 3Kv .1uF 940c's that have withstood a couple years so far. That includes many times when the coil was misconfigured (most of the time? ) which is worse on the caps than running perfectly tuned, if I am not mistaken. I have potted them in 2.5"x2.5"x8" bricks of epoxy too which was dumb and I wouldn't do it again - the caps have no way to dissipate heat, not to mention I have no way to tell if one of them is failed aside from a drop in capacitance. So far they haven't changed any though. Today I am officially replacing them with 2 Maxwell 37667's but if the pulse caps end up being bunk I will go back to the MMCs as they still work fine for my use - I only have a 10 KVA, 13800V pig, with a 6KW welder ballast though so if you are using higher voltage or wattage then the caps may be more at risk.

you want to use the 942c series, the 940c series will not survive
tesla coil duty.

Hi again, since i am using ALL my money to buy caps i need to
choose wisely... which one would you guys recommend: (i am using a
10KV 23mA OBIT by the way = 6.1nF resonance)

Option one: 5984-940C30S1K-F Cornell Dubilier 3KVDC 0.01uF 5
strings of 8 pcs each:
40 caps for total of 6.25nF.
(x50) 1.23 each for total of $61.50

Option two: 5984-940C30S47K-F Cornell Dubilier 3KVDC 0.047 2
strings of 12 pcs each:
24 caps for total of 7.8nF.
(x25) 2.00 each for total of $50.00

or should i just scrap both those options and go for far larger
than resonance? i am of a strictly tight budget. thanks for all
the help and hopefully i will finish my first coil within the 6
months ive been working on it.

p.s. why is the voltage of the entire MMC (3KV * 8 = 24000 / 5
strings = 4800V??) only 4800 volts when the peak voltage of the
xfrm is 14140V?
thanks
