GTO is made for this purpose, has good HV insulation, and is available in short lengths locally from any good neon sign shop.

The current is very small at maybe 100mA peak. But the voltage might be 10,000V peak!! So thin wire but heavy insulation is what is needed. Of course, heavy wire with heavy insulation works fine too at the cost of weight and perhaps money.

Just a question on wire size to use when setting the Nst in a separate box a few feet away.
What size is best in AWG? Is bigger better?
