Hi Bert,

I got a batch of your shrunken quarters years ago and I requested to get the "wire fragments too" ;-)))

"Normal" people get a kick out of the coins, but "I" got the wires too since that is what is "really cool" :o))

I still have them all (I guess I kept them all for "myself" :-)))

I scanned some wire here (big 4 Meg file):

The wire was stretched as an X-Y vector as an "expanding coil" probably not too much larger than the coin. There are inertial and explosive forces that tend to bend the wire up too along with impacts to the containment walls... The wire fails in weak areas that become dominate fracture areas. I suspect plasmas became conductors as the system ripped apart too.

So the big question is... Is there anyway to determine if there are "pure" Z-axis forces? Perhaps the wire could be bent in some special way to show only pure Z-axis stress...

I fear, like displacement currents and such, that there is no way to separate or "see" the pure Z-axis forces...

Just a quick note - if you Google "Ampere Force" you'll find LOTS more
hits, quite a few of them in the published literature.

Those on the list who also play with very high currents such as coin
shrinking or (especially) exploding wires may encounter some rather
"interesting" effects associated with wire fragmentation. Under very
fast, high current pulses, wires shatter into relatively equal sized
fragments, with fracture surfaces showing clear evidence of tensile
forces. This phenomenon does not appear (at least a first glance) to be
consistent with Maxwell/Lorentz forces.

There are no definitive references.  The links circle back to

According to Richard:

"If" there is some quaint effect there, it seems to be practically no
 information on the net about it.  It does not seem to be a concern
to us in any case, so we will leave it up to fusor.net.
