How about the idea that the grid feedback coil is now much more coupled to
the secondary than it is to the primary, and there is some phase shift along
the secondary?  Possibly the primary-secondary-feedback coil phase
relationship is different than with the grid coil tightly coupled to the
primary coil, and this makes for better performance?  I am just guessing
here, but someone could do a simulation to verify or disprove this
hypothesis.
