Hey Gerry,

as far as I know you have to adjust the coupling so that the spark
gap quenches at the first primary notch for ideal energy transfer.

Redards, Q.

Q,

Some large coils may be able to quench on the first notch,
but for the typical small or intermediate coil generally a quench
on the 3rd notch (possibly 2nd in some cases), can be expected
to give best results. Many factors are involved such as the type
of spark gap, etc. The quenching will generally improve as the
power level is increased (and as the sparks get longer)
if the gap is designed well.

Coupling should be adjusted using the method Gerry mentions below.

Hi Curt,

It is common for people that adjust their coupling to increase it to
the point where racing arcs begin and then back off some. If you
dont have racing arcs, secondary to primary breakdown, and it works
to your satisfaction, then it is probably OK.
