Just curious: why not use commonly-ebayed MM fiber as commonly used in fibre channel and network connections? A few months ago I bought sixteen 100m spools, Dell OEM original, brand new, for $10 apiece. Fiber GBICs are also dirt cheap if you want a sure-fire connection method with built-in LEDs.
