Just curious guys.

When stating mid point ground, are you saying the hv side is mid point grounded? If so, you don't want to ground one of the bushings. I'm all for grounding a hv bushing when possible (do it myself), but if the secondary is midpoint grounded, then you just have to hook it up like a hv side mid-point grounded NST (floating outputs).

Take care,
Bart

Ground one of the bushings. also be sure to make the connection to the inside of the Archemedian spiral primary to the grounded bushing side of the spark gap. Run the other bushing to the opposite side of the sparkgap and then thru the series cap into the "hot" tapped side of the primary.

its a double pole xfrm with mid point ground
connected to the ground on my safety gap, and the
two hot wires are connected in series with the LC
ciruit, and in paralell with the main spark gap

Hey Dr.,

sounds like he is using an OBIT since his "supply" has 10 kV @ 23 mA which sounds very much like an OBIT ;-) . OBITs are usually midpoint-grounded so he will have to hook the center-tap of the transformer's secondary (which is usually connected to the iron core) to RF ground so he gets two "hot" wires out of his transformer having 5 kV each in reference to ground, being 180° out of phase. Grounding the core (and therefore the center tap) and one bushing will result in shorting out the transformer's secondary.

Regards, Q.

Do you have any connections to the center bushing on the low voltage side of the xmfr? Only the two outer bushing are used. Ground is connected to case, and one of the HV bushings should also be connected to this case ground.

When i turn it on, the spark gap fires on a very short distance, and i smell something burning, but I dont think its my transformer because it still works... I am seeing absolutely NOTHING on my secondary, so i think my capacitors might have something wrong with them. Help would be increadible, thanks!

Seems as something wrong with the capacitors. Can you measure the
capacitance? Are you not using too small resistors across the
capacitors? The gap fires if just placed across the transformer?
Are the support structures of the assembly made with materials
with enough insulation?
