     I would guess you could either use optical or ultrasonic 
methods of position measurement to provide the input. Three sets of 
off-the-shelf sensors, to provide 3-D positioning.
    Three sets of orthogonal light curtains could provide good 
accuracy and resolution, but would probably be the most expensive 
solution. And the most expensive to replace if they got "zapped".
    Analog output photoeyes or ultrasonic sensors are available for 
industrial automation applications. For example:

    Curious if ultrasonic sensors would have issues with streamer noise?
    There also might be interesting interference effects if the 
sound/light from one is reflected to another sensor by the musician's hands.
