It does, but not enough to make a noticable difference unless you're looking at it with scopes. The primary does most of the limiting, which to a point is good otherwise the caps would destroy themselves from the almost dead-shorts 120+ times a second and the losses would be higher. Look how efficient OLTC's are with ~10x the peak current despite making the spark gap solid state.

Wouldn't all of the stray inductance adversely affect the peak current?

Hi Jim,

As Jim Lux and Antonio explained, it's likely not
a big deal, but it "is" worth measuring,
especially on a large MMC as you are building.
Keep in mind that the inductance is relative. If
you have a really small coil that uses little
primary L, then the concern is greater. But if it
is a normal size coil (3" secondary or larger),
there's likely no worry's. I have found through
both modeling and experimentation, that lead
inductance is an issue when the primary is small
(for a tiny coil) and the MMC inductance may also be worth taking a look at.

I'm glad you brought this point up. It's
something I haven't measured and it was never a
concern before (until I started building little tiny coils).
