Good Luck with your first. I remember when one day I finially decided to build my first coil. My wife looked at me like I had totally lost my mind when I started winding copper tubing around a plastic flower pot! (Kinda like that scene from "Close Encounters" when the guy built a model of a mountain with mashed potatoes!) When it actually worked she jumped up and down with excitement - not because she liked the coil, but because she was relieved that I was still (mostly) sane.

Curt.

For now, I am looking at using the nice big iced tea bottles for the
primary tank cap. Maybe when I tire of that, I will look further into
a GOOD MMC. Maybe i'll string a few up, and use them in the filter
anyways, just to get the thing together. I will be testing one of
them with just a spark gap, and the NST (with the power wasting
filter) just for grins. My G/F already thinks I'm nuts! Thanks for the info...

Hi Slurp (?):

I think you're right about it being too good to be true. Based on the
small size I would guess that these are mylar units, and not at all
suited for high current pulse discharge applications. No harm in trying
them, but don't be too surprised if they fail. And while you're correct
in that such caps might be suitable for use in an R-C filter, the
capacitance is rather on the high side. You want roughly 500pF for the
filter, and these are six times that, which would end up wasting a lot
of power.

Chalk it up to experience, and look elsewhere for caps. There are on
rare occasions surplus caps that might be suitable for TC use, but
unless you really know caps or ask here first, I'd recommend using
either Cornell Dubilier 942 series caps, or using glass bottle caps.
You may also want to reconsider the gap construction and use parallel
copper pipes rather than just bolts.
