With your 6 ft ball topload you want it as close to the last winding as possible. Spheres do not distribute their electrostatic shielding down the coil as efficiently as toroids do.

Concerning my 16" diameter by 86" fiberglass secondary,,wound 80.5
inches w/#14solid,to one inch from the top,,with 6' diameter copper
covered sphere...
 ie: the topload should probably just clear the top of the secondary???
     or possibly sit on top??
