Hi Anthony,

The coupling is just like any other configuration. It is based on the mutual inductance between coils as based on their individual inductance and proximity to one another. One can certainly build an internal primary. But, in order to mechanically make it a viable option, the secondary would need to be pretty large for winding purposes, placement and fastening techniques, etc.. Thus, most primary windings are external. Greg's extreme Electrum coil did incorporate an internal primary. To figure out the coupling, simply use Javatc. It can do internal primary's as easily as external. Just feed it the data.

Also, Antonio's programs may also be able to do this type of modeling.

Take care,
Bart

I want to know more about using an internal primary. It seems like it would
be over coupled but, I have no idea really. How is the coupling figured out
with an internal primary?

Operating at 6 kW (220 X 30 Amps) you would be luck to get 80"
discharges. I remember a guy who was running a 38 kW coil and getting
55' - 105' arcs. The coil was 5' in diameter, had an internal primary
and stood about 25' tall.
