hi,
as you deminish transfer times there is not as much time for the energy to be frittered away in the spark gap.
the more energy you have to stuff into the capacity of the secondary the higher voltage you will get in the pulse.
member E = 1/2 Cs (VxV)  therefore a big E stuffed into a small Cs will result in a large Vs squared.
