Re: [TCML] Q

Wrong.

While the current is "sloshing back and forth" it is:

(1) creating a magnetic field in accordance with Maxwells equations

(2) losing energy in the resistance of the wires, Isquared x R losses, and with a high current, due to the squared effect, this can be substantial.

hi,
you get a high Q with smaller couplings. when the coupling is zero the primay can oscillate foreever and never transfer any energy. since it transfers no energy it loses no energy. it still possesses all its "comon sense" losses like gap losses and the like but there is no transfer of energy. the energy just sloshs back and forth from cap to inductor accomplishing nothing. as it cant feel the other circuit. their fluxes do not thread one another. but if you had one of Rohein's spiral strip transformers running a k=0.6; you will obtain a complete transfer of energy from primary to secondary in 1/2 cycle. you can see that not too much energy gets frittered away in the gap cuz ther aint no time. rohein uses the spiral strip winding, look at patent 50779482 by villecco. there is a recipe for a 6" wide spiral strip. also all the formulas for self-inductance of the secondary and the mutual inductance for the single turn primary coupled to the secondary. the foumula for the self-induction of the secondary takes about 40 hours of fast computer time. sometimes users think its broken but it's not; it just does not have a working notice that pops up about every hour. God invented the spiral strip winding while he rested on the 7th day; and put it in x-ray oil.
