Just one little data point on this topic:

Many "cement forms" (one popular brand being "Sonotube") are lined with wax to promote easy separation from the concrete once it has cured. As someone who likes to glue his form supports (end plugs) into place, the presence of that wax was frustrating.

Long after I stopped using sealed cardboard forms, I discovered that the same companies sell non-waxed versions of their tube for use as shipping containers. They are just harder (but not impossible) to find than the waxed versions.
