Hello Chip,
SCRs are either on or off, you can only turn them off by removing 
power to them or bringing the voltage across them to zero or below 
like in AC applications.  You can control power like AC by turning 
them on at different points (times) on the AC waveform.  This is 
called phase control and is how light dimmers and motor speed controls work.

I am just learning about this electronic stuff so, Can someone 
please tell me if a SCR has states other then on and off. Can you 
vary the amount of power passed thru them. I was thinking (probably 
wrong again), that they either pass electrons or they don't. Thanks 
in advance..
